Tecno recently hosted a global launch event where the company launched its next-generation flagship smartphone series dubbed the Tecno Phantom X2 5G. This series includes two devices: the Pro variant called the Phantom X2 Pro 5G and the vanilla Phantom X2 5G. In theory, the Phantom X2 5G is the successor to the Tecno Phantom X smartphone that arrived in India last year and is available at a price of Rs 25,999. In reality, however, the phone is so much more thanks to the many features it offers. Read also – Xiaomi, iQOO, Realme phones discounted to Rs 1,250 in Amazon sale 2022: all phone deals
The Phantom X has a modest 90Hz display with Mediak’s Helio G95 processor paired with a 50 + 13 + 8 MP rear camera, a 48 MP selfie camera and a 4,700 mAh battery. The Phantom X2 5G takes a step forward by introducing a mix of powerful specs and unique features that are not easy to find. To give you a brief summary, the Phantom X2 5G comes with a 120 Hz AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass Victus that is paired with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset, a 64 MP + 13 MP + 2 MP rear camera system and a 32 MP front camera, a larger battery of 5,160 mAh. However, the highlight of the Phantom X2 5G or the entire series is the retractable camera that steals the spotlight. Read also – Tecno launches Megabook S1 laptop: check price, specs, availability
Phantom X2 5G costs 2699 SAR (approximately Rs 59,120) while the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro 5G costs 3499 SAR (approximately Rs 96,358). The Phantom X2 5G is expected to arrive in India sometime towards the end of this month.
Even if the Phantom X2 5G takes some time to arrive in India, we once got to steal it at Tecno’s global launch event and here are our initial thoughts on the device.
Tecno Phantom X2 5G design and rendering
The Phantom X2 5G has a premium design that’s hard to miss. The phone has a glass back with frosted glass finish. On top of the back is a square camera module consisting of the triple camera setup with LED flash. There are two gigantic cameras on the opposite ends of the camera module, one of which is the retractable camera, which is one of the main highlights of this smartphone series. The camera module is separate and different from what we’ve seen in many smartphones these days. Whether you like it or not is debatable. That said, the back of the phone looks different in a good way thanks to the balance of shapes and the color Tecno has chosen for the phone. Adding to the overall appeal of the phone is the fact that, despite the appeal of frosted glass, the phone isn’t slippery at all and easy to hold, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra we reviewed earlier this year .
On the front, the Phantom X2 5G has an AMOLED display with curved edge design with the selfie camera in the upper center section. The screen is bright and well-lit all the time and handled the blazing Dubai sun with relative ease. In low-light conditions, the display offers a comfortable viewing experience.
Tecno Phantom X2 5G experience
In terms of experience, the Phantom X2 5G is comfortable to use and fast enough for everyday use. The phone comes with Google’s suite of apps along with a bunch of other apps, many of which you may not need. It is powered by Android 12-based HiOS 12.0, which can be a disappointment to many users, especially for a phone that is currently launching. However, Tecno has promised to release the Android 13 update to the device around January 2023. At a time when many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) haven’t released the Android 13 update for many of their price segment smartphones, getting Android 13 in about a month and a half isn’t a bad bargain, especially when you consider the overall package that this device offers. That said, we’ll need to test this phone more to make a more definitive verdict on its performance.
Tecno Phantom X2 5G camera
Camera is one department that the Tecno Phantom X2 5G handles exceptionally well. During our limited time with the phone, it was able to capture low-light images with surprising clarity – an area that’s currently tricky for most smartphones on the market. It was also able to reproduce colors quite accurately, even when zooming in on images. This exceptional clarity was maintained even during the day.
As far as colors are concerned, the phone offers vibrant colors with the right amount of brightness contrast. Overall, the cameras are a hit. However, we’ll have to test the phone under a variety of conditions to find out more.
