Hero Nani’s sister, Deepti Ganta, has turned director and has completed her debut web series Meet Cute. The anthology series has five episodes and is now streaming on Sony Live. Let’s see what it’s like.
Story:
The first episode is titled ‘Meet The Boy’ and is about a young independent woman who meets a stranger for a marriage alliance. It stars Varsha Bollama and Ashwin Kumar as the leads. The second story is titled ‘Old is Gold’ and is about a woman who meets an older man and discusses her marital problems. It stars Ruhani Sharma and Satyaraj. The third story is called ‘In L(ove)aw’ and is about a woman who spies on his son’s girlfriend. With Rohini, Akanksha Singh and Deekshith Shetty. The fourth story has been titled ‘Star Struck’ and is about a doctor who randomly meets a big movie star. It stars Adah Sharma and Siva Kandukuri. Last but not least, the last story is Ex-Girlfriend and is about a woman who meets her husband’s ex-girlfriend. It stars Sunaina, Sanchita Poonacha and Govind Padmasoorya.
Pros:
Meet cute is based on what happens when strangers meet and discuss life issues. Each story has a point of conflict and is quite emotionally portrayed. Debut director Deepthi Ganta should be appreciated for her writing which is classy. The way she created a relevant point of conflict and ended the stories with proper justification shows her prowess as a filmmaker. Deepthi’s characters, behavior, clothes and emotional issues are so good and grab the audience’s attention.
Yet another great asset of the web series is the striking emotions that are so well balanced without being melodramatic. There’s fun, drama and, moreover, a moral in every story that will keep you in your seats, though the pace is slow. The best of the bunch is In L(ove)aw starring Rohini and Akanksha Singh. How an Orthodox mother deals with her son’s choice of marriage is beautifully portrayed and the performances by Rohini and Akanksha are stunning.
The best part about these stories is that they last less than thirty minutes and never bore you. Varsha Bollama, Adah Sharma and Siva Kandukuri play their roles with utmost honesty. The last episode has a very good twist as Sunaina and Sanchita Poonacha give a good performance. Each story has its own charm and the one that hits you hard is the story of Satyaraj and Ruhani Sharma. The understanding between an adult couple and how it affects Ruhani’s character is quite well heightened.
Meet Cute is all about conversations and they are great. The intense facets of life are dealt with in a simple way and that is what appeals to this series. The stories have no forced emotions and are easy to grasp. Dialogues deserve a special mention because they are daily conversations and yet have an impact. Last but not least, the casting and performances are subtle as each actor lives in their character and gives their best.
Min Points:
The creators created this web series for an OTT audience. So the use of English is a lot. While it won’t be a problem, a section may find it a bit difficult. Star Struck’s story looks weak because no real emotion comes from this. The concept of a man meeting a star without knowing about her looks nice on paper, but is not well executed.
As mentioned before, the pace is a bit slow in a few episodes. The series will suit the sensibilities of those who enjoy soothing romance and drama. So those looking for entertainment might be a bit disappointed as the series has different sensibilities.
Technical aspects:
Meet Cute can be watched mainly because of the beautiful production values. Although not much money is involved, each chosen location is beautifully captured by the cameraman. The costumes are stylish and Vijay Bulganin’s music is beautiful. The small song fragments are soothing and leave you wanting more. The assembly is good and so is the production design.
Coming to director Deepthi Ganta, she makes an endearing debut and wins brownie points for her narration. For a first-timer, she is too good and has the sensibilities to make good movies in the future. There is a natural flair to her writing and depth to her characters. The way she subtly evoked subtle comedy and emotions shows that she certainly has a long way to go as a director.
Verdict:
Overall, as the name suggests, Meet Cute is a simple yet light-hearted web series full of endearing emotions and great performances. The casting, running time and cute moments hold your attention. Nani should be really proud of his sister, as she makes a striking debut as a director and tells a story full of simple life lessons. While the pace is slow in places, each story has its own charm and neatly matches the mood for a perfect OTT rendering and can be watched with the whole family without a doubt.
