Currently it is thriller season and Amazon Prime Video has released a new thriller series titled Vadhandhi: The Fable of Velonie. The series stars SJ Suryah and Sanjana in pivotal roles. The series is streaming on the OTT platform and let’s see how it goes.

Story:

A young girl’s corpse is found at the shooting location of a movie, who is misinterpreted as the movie’s heroine. However, soon the police discover that it is Veloine (Sanjana) who has died and not the heroine. SI Vivek (SJ Suryah) handles the case and finds it difficult to solve due to confusing leads and rumors that arose after Veloine’s death. The rest of the series focuses on how Vivek solved Veloine’s murder mystery.

Pros:

This is a whodunit thriller and the suspense is held nicely from start to finish. Plus, the brilliance of the writing is such that we doubt any character who suspects being behind Veloine’s death. Each character behaves idiosyncratically, drawing suspicion from the police, which is why the sensationalist element succeeds.

The show delivers a strong message, namely the character assassination of women in the modern world. This message is well conveyed and is about people pointing out women’s choices. Occasionally, a few characters come and go in the series through whom the director firmly conveys this point.

Many characters skillfully supported the plot. SJ Suryah is so effortless with his performance and it is a joy to watch. We all know that he is a versatile actor, and he plays the role of the police to perfection. Sanjana, who played the titular role, is brilliant. She portrayed the emotions beautifully, and her role was very well written.

As a writer, Nasser is good in his role, and Laila did a good job as Sanjana’s mother. Others like Vivek Prasanna, Hareesh Peradi and Smruthi Venkat are adequate in their roles. The twists and turns are well executed and the last few episodes in particular are snappy. The way a certain part of the media behaves is well represented.

Min Points:

The main drawback of the series is its long runtime. The editing team should have shortened the length to increase the impact. Sometimes the series gets tiring due to some lengthy sequences. In addition, in the first episodes, the story is very slow and the process stalls. Hence, the audience would get a bit bored, and a quick screenplay here could have made more of a difference.

The excessive use of English in the series may not sit well with some of the audience. In addition, there is a bit of sexual content and more violence in the show, which might bother some. The familial angle of SJ Suryah’s character should have had more depth to take the drama to the next level.

Technical aspects:

Simon K King’s background score is great and intensified the proceedings. Saravanan Ramaswamy’s cinematography is solid and the forest sections are beautifully shot. However, as mentioned, the assembly could have been crispier. The production values are great and Pushkar & Gayathri’s touch can be seen in the series. The Telugu dubbing is also good.

When he came to director Andrew Louis, he did a decent job with the series. The story is compelling and the various subplots are nicely woven into this murder mystery. But the director should have paid more attention to the pacing of the first few episodes and the running time, which softened the overall feel. Andrews got a perfect cast and he got solid performances out of it.

Verdict:

All in all, Vadhandhi: The Fable of Veloine is a solid whodunit thriller with a good message. The brilliant performances and the way the director maintains the tension are positive factors. But to enjoy the show, you have to go through a slow pace and long episodes. Those who like to watch crime thrillers can try it.
