Netflix has tried its best to give good content to its Indian users, and in this regard, they have now released a new series titled Khakee: The Bihar Chapter. The series got quite a buzz as the famous writer-director Neeraj Pandey is its creator. The series is currently streaming on the OTT platform and let’s see how it is.
Story:
The plot is based on the book “Bihar Diaries: The True Story of How Bihar’s Most Dangerous Criminal Was Caught” written by Amit Lodha. The series opens with how politics and criminal activities go hand in hand in the state of Bihar. Then we get the introduction of the IPS officer Amit Lodha played by Karan Tacker. Amit Lodha is slowly developing in his career. At the same time, Chandan Mahto (Avinash Tiwary), who started as a nobody doing small jobs, becomes a powerful criminal who poses a great threat to the public. The rest of the story is about how the police captured Chandan Mahto.
Pros:
The whole setup of the series is nicely done and we are taken into the Bihari world quite well. The production design created very well reflects the mood of the Bihar state between 2000-2006, and all the artists got the Bihari slang right. The opening scene shows how the criminals used to get support from the politicians in the state and is intriguing.
Towards the end, the show gets interesting and the last episode in particular has good depth. It’s about the loopholes in the justice system and how criminals use these flaws to evade their crimes. In the end, there is a little mind game running between the protagonist and the antagonist using the then existing technology, which is interesting.
Avinash Tiwary was fantastic as Chandhan Mahto, the one who rocked the whole state of Bihar. The actor just lived the part and did the show full justice. His body language, dialogue and appearance were apt. Karan Tacker put in a fine performance in the role of IPS, whose role takes on more weight as the show progresses. Abhimanyu Singh, Ashutosh Rana, Ravi Kishan and all other supporting cast were solid in their given roles.
Min Points:
If we have a filmmaker like Neeraj Pandey joining the show, expectations would be high, but the show didn’t quite live up to them. While there are a few tense moments, they are few and far between, which is why the show is boring and mostly bogs down.
The show becomes completely predictable without many twists and turns. Although the series is inspired by the book, the creators should have added more interesting elements to make it more engaging and reduce the monotony factor. Also the police investigation angle lacks any novelty that adds to the boring factor. Despite getting so close to the criminal, the police fail to catch him, and the way things are run here looks silly.
The length is another aspect that drags the show down. Gripping and fast-paced narration is a must for a show of this ilk, but unfortunately the creators stick with the formula-driven screenplay. The VFX works are shoddy and hence the action episodes look unconvincing.
Technical aspects:
The title track of Humra Bihar is pleasantly composed by Advait Nemlekar and the BGM in the series is too good. Hari Nair’s cinematography is solid and he successfully captured the rustic state of Bihar. The production values are okay. However, the editing team should have shortened the long sequences to make the proceedings interesting.
When he came to the director, Bhav Dulia, he was just doing well with the series. While the show had more scope, the writing team failed to come up with exciting narration, turning the show into a mainstream crime drama. Hence, solid performances from the main cast have no impact on the whole.
Verdict:
All in all, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter is a decent show with a few good moments. The performances and the way the world of Bihar was shown excite one but the straight forward narration and long running time play the bummer. You can still try, but nothing new is shown in the series.
