Zaid Khan is introduced to the PAN India film Banaras. The movie got quite a buzz with its trailer and songs. It hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Siddarth (Zaid Khan) challenges his college friends that he will drop Dhani (Sonal Monteiro) for him and approaches Dhani in an interesting way. Dhani believes in Siddarth and gets into a huge problem because of him. Realizing his mistake, Siddarth travels to Banaras, where Dhani is staying, to apologize to her. Did Siddarth apologize to Dhani? Has Dhani forgiven him? What are the situations Siddarth encounters in this regard? This is part of the rest of the story.
Pros:
Zaid Khan, who made his acting debut with Banaras, played with ease. We won’t get the feeling that he was making his first movie and very nicely emotional in crucial scenes. He completely carried the film on his shoulders from start to finish. He also looks good and stylish and can grow big in the coming days.
Sonal Monteiro looked beautiful and played her part well. The film starts off very well in an exciting way. The first ten minutes of the film arouse curiosity about what would happen in the following sequences. The interval twist is decent.
Others like Sujay Shastry, Achyuth Kumar and Devaraj were decent in their respective roles. There are a few interesting moments in the film here and there that catch our attention. Few dialogues and nice portions in places are good.
Cons:
The real problem is that the main plot is not well established. The director took his own time to get to the main plot and didn’t focus on the screenplay in the first half. As a result, the love trail feels dragged, and it’s only during the intermission that the actual story begins.
The tense moments in the second half make us eagerly await the head turn, and we will be deeply disappointed when it comes. Unfortunately, the point at issue and the screenplay didn’t go hand in hand. The director tried to include too many genres and concepts in the film, which makes the film feel left somewhere in between. The numbers come as speed breakers.
The way the film is going is incomprehensible due to the underpowered execution, and the emotions could have been conveyed in a better way. There is a philosophical tinge at the end, but the way things are performed doesn’t fully captivate the audience.
Technical aspects:
The background music of Ajaneesh Loknath is decent. Advaitha Gurumurthy’s cinematography is fantastic and he has captured the majestic locations of Banaras very nicely. The production values are good as is the Telugu dubbing.
Jayathirtha’s direction is subpar and he should have focused more on the screenplay. His idea of presenting another film is fine, but the problem arises from tying too many elements together. He should have narrowed it down to fewer aspects to make the film more interesting. Also, more effort should have been put into writing. However, Jayathirtha was triumphant in extracting good performances from artists.
verdict:
Overall, Banaras is a so-so love story with a few captivating moments. Zaid Khan’s performance and a few good scenes are let down by writing and screenplay issues, making the movie just a great movie this weekend.
