Nikhil and Anupama Parameswaran, who scored a mighty blockbuster hit with Karthikeya 2, have again linked 18 pages. Director Sukumar wrote the plot of the film and the film is directed by Surya Pratap. The film came out on the screens today, and let’s see how it is.
Story:
Siddhu (Nikhil Siddharth), an app developer loves a girl but she cheats on him. This pushes Siddhu into a depression and in doing so, he comes across the diary of Nandhini (Anupama Parameswaran) on a road. Siddhu starts reading it and slowly he falls for her. Siddhu learns many interesting facts about Nandhini and when he tries to meet her, there comes a big twist in the story. What is it? Did he meet her? Has Siddhu expressed his feelings for Nandhini? This forms the core of the film.
Pros:
There have been a few movies in the past where the main couple falls for each other without meeting. 18 Pages fall into the same category and the makers manage to highlight the romantic aspect honestly. In this modern age, it’s hard to show love without combo scenes of the main couple, but Sukumar’s plot has good moments that engage the audience.
You can feel the chemistry between Nikhil and Anupama, though they don’t meet until the very end. The writing here is well balanced with sharing fun and love. Songs drive the story and they are well placed with meaningful lyrics. The director has designed the first half in a light and simple way with good comedic portions. The climax is again sweet and simple, which worked well.
Nikhil has once again chosen a different script and the actor has put in a neat performance. He’s too good at the funny sequences and the emotional scenes show the actor in him. Of course, Anupama Parameswaran is in the role of Nandhini and a root for her character from her first scene. She is convincing as a small town girl and her scenes are well written.
Sarayu gets a good long part and does it well. Some important social aspects, such as how social media and mobile phones influence human bonding and interactions, are also beautifully portrayed. There is a small sequence where Nikhil says one should devote one’s time to one’s elderly parents, which has some inner depth.
Min Points:
While the first half is quite endearing with some good magic moments, the chart drops in the second half. The procedure here is quite slow and the times are disappointing. Of course you expect a solid second half, but the turn of events is not very impressive.
There is a tension factor involved in Anupama’s character which becomes very generic after a certain point in time. The flashback is pretty routine and the momentum isn’t maintained during this particular episode. The exciting elements lack punch and that makes the film monotonous here and there. Ajay and Shatru’s characters don’t have much meaning and they play common villains.
Technical aspects:
Every song in the movie is well composed by Gopi Sundar and the background music is mesmerizing too. The production values are decent, but the editing needed a few improvements, especially in the second half. Vasanth’s cinematography is fine and the songs are beautifully portrayed. There are a few dubbing issues here and there that affect the viewing experience.
When he came to director Surya Pratap, he did a decent job with the film. He managed to make the most of the lead pair, but could have been a little more careful with the suspense sections and a few key sequences. Director Sukumar has written a feel-good story and shows his mark at a few moments.
Statement:
Overall, 18 Pages is quite a love story that gives a different feeling to the viewers. In addition to the exceptional performance of the main pair, some relevant topics are also discussed. The way the film is largely light-hearted is good. If you can ignore the somewhat sluggish second half and routine flashback sections, the movie is going to be quite a viewing this weekend.
